About Serra Grande

About Serra Grande

Serra Grande is an underserved community located on the Southern coast of Bahia, in the heart of the tropical forest.  It is located in an area that is considered to have the third greatest biodiversity in the world!  Serra Grande is an oasis of breathtaking natural beauty, significant biodiversity, and abundant natural resources, but as with many underserved communities around the world, this does not translate into economic or educational resources for its residents.  Many members of the community live in significant poverty and endure the afflictions of lower literacy rates, limited knowledge and availability of health initiatives and prevention efforts, limited medical facilities within available distance of travel, among other issues.  The potential that exists in Serra Grande, and that will help making our efforts sustainable, are the sophistication and drive of the many community leaders and organizations we met with, ranging from community health workers, school teachers, the local librarian, the organizations Arapyau and Tamboa, and the women who form part the Mothers in Solidarity network.  They, as well as us, are very impassioned and hope to create a great impact on their community!
