Founded in 2011 by Yale College graduate Scott Clarke (’02), Amandla Development works to empower South African youth with equal access to quality education opportunities. We do this by building capacity in effective grassroots organizations working in education, in order to maximize their impact. The name Amandla comes from the Xhosa/Zulu tradition of call-and-response. A crowd member declares “Amandla!” meaning “power” and the crowd responds “Ngawethu!” adding that the power “is ours.” Amandla Development builds its partners’ capacity in order to help them effectively collaborate to overcome barriers on the cradle-to-career journey of Philippi’s youth. By using data to diagnose key issues in the community and supporting a holistic approach, Amandla cultivates a powerful network-based approach whose innovations can reach beyond their local communities to have national impact.

The Spirit of Africa ® is an innovative Destination Management Company (DMC) in the South African inbound tourism industry, commanding the field of special interest travel and specializing in customized itineraries and agendas to achieve specific in-country goals. Since launching in 1994, our fundamental purpose has been to facilitate very personal encounters with our destination and, where relevant, our people. In such cases, this manifests in direct, interpersonal and mutually beneficial contact between our foreign guests and their South African counterparts, We concurrently deliver faultless and seamless logistical and support services to guests enjoying an itinerary designed exactly to suit their interests and desires, thus ensuring that they enjoy an experience of a lifetime.  We ensure our guests have an inspirational time in South Africa – enjoying the natural and cultural splendours we have to offer alongside enriching interactions with their local counterparts.  At Spirit of Africa, we cherish the fact that through the course of our every day work we are able to uplift the lives of those South Africans less fortunate than ourselves. In this spirit we strive to see the benefits of tourism reach further than just the commercial world of travel.
